Breastfeeding physicians have the ability to assess the entire breastfeeding journey and rule out other causes of breastfeeding challenges before recommending a surgical intervention such as a frenotomy (tongue-tie surgery). Sometimes issues such as oversupply, fast letdown, positioning or muscular asymmetries can look like tongue ties.
A breastfeeding physician clinic is the preferred route for investigating breastfeeding concerns, but their wait times can lead families to explore other options.

Dental clinics
Dentists are skilled in assessing the structures of the mouth and can intervene with tongue ties, often using a laser.
If accessing a dentist for tongue tie assessment, it is recommended to also work with a lactation consultant and or bodywork provider pre- & post- procedure.
There is a significant cost for assessment and procedure that may be covered by private benefits.
